Why should I give to the Texas Heart Institute?
Every area of the Texas Heart Institute is influenced by donations, from the development of devices to sustain failing hearts to new ways to detect and treat life-threatening blockages in arteries, from the training of young heart specialists and scientists to a free Heart Information Center. Your generosity helps sustain these programs today and the promise they hold for the future.
We do everything possible to make certain your donation reaches its intended use. We have determined that over the past four years, our fund-raising costs have averaged only 3 cents per dollar raised. That means 97 cents of every dollar donated helps hasten the day when heart disease is no longer a threat to our lives. The national average is between 10 and 15 cents per dollar raised and anything below 10 cents is very rare.
Because the Texas Heart Institute does not participate in patient care revenues, philanthropy will continue to provide our vital margin of excellence. Your support plays an important role in maintaining the Institute's contributions to society and health throughout the world.

How do I make a gift in honor or memory of someone?
All contributions can be designated in memory or honor of a special person or occasion. Simply complete the honor/memorial section of our online donation form or use our mail-in donation form. We will be happy to notify the family of a memorial gift or an individual who has been honored that a contribution has been made, however it is our policy not to disclose the amount of the gift.
Is my gift tax deductible?
Yes. The Texas Heart Institute is a 501(c)3 organization. Gifts are deductible on federal tax returns subject to the limits allowed by the Internal Revenue Service. A copy of the letter documenting tax-exempt status is available from the Development Office. When you make a gift, the Development Office will provide you with the necessary documentation for tax purposes.
I can only make a small gift at this time. Will it still make an impact?
Every contribution makes a difference. The combined effect of many small gifts can be powerful. More than half of the Texas Heart Institute's operating budget relies on the generosity of people who give what they can, when circumstances permit. Your support is vital in the struggle against heart disease.
What opportunities are there for recognition?
We are always pleased to acknowledge the support of our donors. All donors are recognized in the Institute's publications unless the donor requests otherwise. Other recognition opportunities available vary with the type and size of gift. For example, sponsorship of special events offers opportunities for recognition in program materials and media coverage. Naming opportunities are available for endowments and for the construction of facilities. A gift or pledge of at least $25,000 ensures a permanent association of the donor's name in a prominent location in the Denton A. Cooley Building.
How can I get more information about making a gift?
The Texas Heart Institute's Development Office provides professional staff experienced in assisting you with all types of gifts. We are happy to work with you and your legal or financial advisors to develop a giving plan that is in your best interest and that also fulfills your desire to make a significant difference in the fight against heart disease.
